Offering a wide range of cultural and historical attractions to explore, Guangzhou is one of China's most popular cities. This thriving city is home to more than 10 million people and visitors will be able to spend several days exploring ancient temples and museums. What's more, when the hustle and bustle of Guangzhou gets a little too much there are plenty of pretty parks to relax and unwind in.
1) Chen Family Ancestral Temple Part of the Guangdong Museum of Folk Art, the Chen Family Ancestral Temple was built close to the back of the 19th century and when Qing dynasty Emperor Guangxu ruled. The temple's central location means that many visitors should be able to walk here from their hotel in Guangzhou and there are a large number of interesting aspects to this enormous temple such as statues of historic figures.
2) Temple of Six Banyan Trees One of Guangzhou's oldest and most impressive temples, the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees dates back to the year 537. This magnificent temple can be found on Liurong Road, near a good number of hotels in Guangzhou and has a number of surprises in store for visitors. In addition to the magnificent banyan trees, the temple also contains the three largest brass Buddha images in Guangdong Province.
3) Shamian Island Also known as Shamian Dao, exploring Shamian Island offers an interesting insight into the history of Guangzhou. This neighbourhood, which is actually a sandbank rather than an island, was granted to British dignitaries during the 19th century and a magnificent collection of warehouses and colonial buildings can be found here. One of the best things about exploring Shamian Island is that vehicles are restricted here, making wandering along the narrow lanes a pleasant experience.
4) Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Located at the top of Yuexiu Hill, the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is dedicated to Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, the man who founded the Republic of China. The main hall covers some 12,000 square metres and those who venture inside will be able to admire the rich decoration within. However, the most striking sight here is the enormous statue of Dr Sun Yat-sen, which is situated in front of the hall.
